USA Today Reports Killeen TX Has Most Affordable Homes in United States
About the Killeen, Texas Area

As the largest city in Bell County, the beautiful city of Killeen sits 60 miles north of Austin just off Hwy 190. Known for being “A City Without Limits,” the Killeen real estate market reflects just that with the variety of options that are available to today’s homebuyers.
With a rich Texan culture, Killeen was established in 1881 and named after Frank P. Killeen, the assistant manager of the Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad system that once expanded through Central Texas. Up until World War II, the town existed as a small farming and trade center. The demands of the war required the opening of a military base in the town of Killeen in the early 1940s, which would later become known as Fort Hood in 1950. With the new military base came great economic growth, making the city of Killeen a direct addition of the expansion and support of Fort Hood., bringing much diversity to the region.
A pleasing climate with an average temperature of about 69.7 degrees combined with rolling hills and more than 250 acres of parkland makes Killeen a desirable community to live in. Offering only the best in amenities with a wide array of restaurants, unique shopping spots, sporting venues, golf courses, and numerous city parks that feature plenty of picnic areas, athletic fields, swimming pools, and playgrounds, Killeen provides something for every resident to enjoy.
Young residents attend the Killeen Independent School District, which serves the cities of Killeen, Harker Heights, and Nolanville as it offers an excellent education to nearly 35,000 children. For those pursuing a higher level of education locally, Central Texas College and Tarleton State University-Central Texas provide great opportunities.
There are many enriching career possibilities in the Killeen area to consider. The leading employer in the state of Texas is the Fort Hood military base, as it offers countless opportunities. Other major employers include two local health care facilities of the Scott & White Clinic and Metroplex Hospital, the City Government of Killeen and Central Texas College, and the Killeen Independent School District.
The Killeen real estate market is diverse with all that it offers, from affordable condos and townhomes to rural ranches with horse facilities and lots of acreage. For families, there are great communities and subdivisions with modest single family houses or golf course housing and gated country estates for which homebuyers can choose what fits best. As a resident in Killeen, Texas you will be proud to be a part of such a strong community where the real estate market continues to prosper. Conventional wisdom says, "Don't pay off your mortgage early." Are you foolish to consider an early payoff? Absolutely not! By adding just $50 to $100 to your mortgage payment every month, you can save thousands of dollars in interest, pay off your loan quicker, and eliminate a major monthly expense.
The argument usually given against paying off a mortgage early is that you can make investments with your extra cash, such as mutual funds, stocks or bonds, which pay higher returns. This approach enables you to take the mortgage interest deduction and have easy access to your money, in case you need it. These are all definite pluses, but are not guaranteed savings results.
Any extra income which an investment might generate above your home equity appreciation can be offset by a bad year in the investment market. Investment earnings can virtually eliminate the income tax advantage of your mortgage interest deduction, since stocks and bonds are likely to generate a fair amount of dividends, interest income and capital gains.
It isn't as simple as conventional wisdom--consult a financial expert.
